TWO primary school kids prompted a full-blown emergency response in North Wagga yesterday when they thought they saw a man with a gun outside their school.
The sighting was phoned in to police at 2.30pm by a staff member from Wagga North Public School who said the students reported that a man wearing a balaclava and possibly carrying a gun was outside. Hampden Street was swarming with more than dozen police officers and a carload of detectives within minutes, including a police 4WD vehicle that lapped the river levy bank. A group of people sitting outside the Palm & Pawn Hotel told the Advertiser they saw police officers jump the school fence. They found nothing, but at 3pm, officers started running down Hampden Street towards the Island View store after a report a man was acting suspiciously. At least six police cars followed – the police exodus surprising passing motorists and pedestrians. The female shop assistant was interviewed by detectives for half an hour while officers were told to put on their bullet-proof vests and continue searching. Detective Sergeant Michael Handley told the Advertiser that police did not find any leads. “We can’t confirm any of the allegations … I didn’t interview the kids but they were about seven or eight years old. They said they thought they saw a gun so I guess the community has seen today how quickly we respond to these types of incidents,” Det Sgt Handley said.
